How It All Happened

The Proposal
  • The Bride

    Clueless until it actually happend

It was December 1st, the beginning of our favorite time of year. We had plans to make dinner and then decorate our Christmas tree. We woke up early to get our apartment ready for the tree to be delivered. Then we got a call that they were out of Douglas Fir Christmas trees, I have never seen Ben get so upset about something so minor. Everything ended up working out and we got the tree late that morning and started putting lights on it. I suggested we just keep going and put all the ornaments on the tree and again Ben became uneasy. Now that I think back he was acting strange the entire day and all the signs were there but I was still totally clueless.

After a dinner of steak and lobster we began decorating the tree. My grandma and my family have given me an ornament each year at Christmas since I have been born, so decorating my own tree is really special to me. As we were getting to the last box Ben suggested he would take them out of the boxes and I could unwrap the ornaments and hang them on the tree. I unwrapped a particularly shiny silver bell and thought it was odd since most of my silver ornaments need to be polished after a year in storage. I took a closer look and it had Christmas 2007 engraved on in. The lights were turned down low so I could barely read below that it said Ben and Malia on the edge of it and I definitely couldn’t read the “Will you marry me?” written on the other side of the bell.I turned around extremely confused, Ben was down on one knee holding a beautiful ring. As he stated the reason he knew I was the one for him, I still couldn’t quite figure out what was going on! Once I realized he was proposing I said yes, of course, and then went through all the emotions I could think of.

We drank a bottle of Dom he pulled from the freezer and started calling our close friends and our family. He had a surprise brunch planned at Salty’s, the next day, for our parents and us. It was a perfect weekend and definitely how I always dreamed it would be.

Perfect plans don't always go as planned

The day started out like any other, at least for Malia it did! I’d been planning my proposal for months, making sure every little last detail was just right. So when I got the call from the Christmas tree delivery company telling me that they weren’t going to be able to deliver our Christmas tree today, I almost came un-glued. The tree was a very critical component to the plan, as you’ll find out if you read further. Malia looked at me like I’d lost my mind. She said “who cares if we set the tree up Saturday or Sunday?” I DID!

After going round and round with the Christmas tree Company we finally figured a way to have the tree delivered early that afternoon. Back on schedule! The plan was to make dinner, have some wine and decorate the newly delivered Christmas tree. I made steak and lobster for the both us. I totally ruined the lobster (first undercooked, then overcooked), but I didn’t care. All I could think about was the proposal. Funny enough, during that dinner Malia made a very timely comment regarding surprises. “No one can ever get me with surprises; I always know when someone is going to surprise me!” Sure you do Mali, sure you do!

After dinner, we cleaned up and started to get ready for the main event! Right about that time it started to snow pretty heavily outside (which never happens in Seattle). Everything seemed to be working out just perfectly; got the tree, had a nice dinner, snow was falling.... I couldn’t have written it up any better than this.

We were working through the ornaments at a frenetic pace, with each ornament I was getting more nervous. When we finally got to the last box of ornaments where I had hidden the “proposal ornament” I was pacing back and forth. Malia was just moving along ornament by ornament, having no idea that the minute she hit the bottom of that box both our lives would be changed forever! She finally got to the ornament that said “Will You Marry Me?” She unwrapped it slowly and looked confused; she tried to make out the engraving in the dark light. She turned around to ask me about the ornament and I was on one knee with a ring in my hand. Her jaw hung open in total shock and surprise. I said, “Malia, I couldn’t imagine spending my life with anyone but you. I love you so much! Will you be my wife?”

    SHE SAID YES!

We popped the Dom Perignon, toasted our engagement and called our closest family and friends with the big news! A truly perfect night!!
